Opal Slagle Blankenship, 87, of Lynchburg, passed away on Friday, July 8, 2016. She was the wife of the late Preston Lee Blankenship.
Born on April 2, 1929, in Elizabethton, Tennessee, Opal was a daughter of the late Charles William Slagle and the late Louise Sams Slagle. In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers and five sisters.
After working 26 years for Wynn’s Precision, Opal retired and still stayed active working for the Disabled American Veterans thrift store and with the adult day care center at Virginia Baptist Hospital.
Left behind to cherish her memory are her children, Gary Lee Blankenship of Lynchburg, Brenda McGinness and her husband, Tim, of Lynchburg, Deborah Isenschmid and her husband, Thomas, of Switzerland, and Sharon Hwang of Lynchburg; her grandchildren, Stephanie McGinness, Sean McGinness and his wife, Rachel, Sara Isenschmid, Jessica Isenschmid, Tomi Isenschmid, Tyler Hwang and Weston Proffitt; and her great-grandchildren, Noah and Declan. She will be greatly missed by her family.
We’d like to give special thanks to Lynchburg Health and Rehab, Centra Hospice and all of the caregivers involved in her care over the past few years.
A funeral service will take place at Tharp Funeral Home in Lynchburg on Thursday, July 14, 2016, at 1 p.m. with Chaplain Wayne Lanham officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Interment will follow at Spring Hill Cemetery.
