Opal Spivey Edwards, 90, of Bedford passed away Friday, July 25, 2014 at Bedford County Nursing Home. She was the wife of the late Warren Jefferson Edwards.

Born December 5, 1923 in Galax, Virginia she was the daughter of the late James Fred Spivey and Marietta Hall Spivey.

Opal retired as a houseparent from Holston United Methodist Home for Children in Greeneville, TN where she cared for adolescent girls who suffered neglect, abuse, family dysfunction and domestic violence. She taught these girls positive behaviors and skills they so desperately needed. Not only did she work with these girls, she helped raise them and did it with love and devotion.

Opal was featured in the Virginia Health Care Association’s Who’s Who in Virginia’s Long Term Care. She had a gentle spirit with a big heart and a life mission to help others. She also received an award from her peers as the most supportive resident of Bedford County Nursing Home. She always did her best to make others feel comfortable and included in group activities. Opal always wore a smile and a positive word for everyone.

Opal was involved in the Women’s Methodist Circle at Christ United Methodist Church. She loved children, quilting, gardening, and baking breads and cakes. Opal also loved volunteering at her church. She was a longtime member of both Gladeville United Methodist Church in Galax, VA as well as Christ United Methodist Church in Greeneville, TN.

In addition to her parents and husband, Opal was also preceded in death by a daughter, Connie Sue Edwards; a sister, Iva Lee Melton; and three brothers, Arthur, David, and Guy Boyd Spivey.

Opal is survived by a daughter, Linda Edwards and her husband, Jim Sikkema of Bedford; two sisters, Ila Mae Largen and Geraldine Bullion both of Galax; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Memorial services will be conducted at 2 PM, Saturday, September 6, 2014 at Gladeville United Methodist Church, 103 Cranberry Rd., Galax, VA 24333 with Rev. Ralph Kidd officiating. Inurnment will follow in the church cemetery.

Memorial services will be conducted at 3 PM, Monday, September 15, 2014 at Bedford County Nursing Home, 1229 County Farm Rd., Bedford, VA 24523 with Chaplain Mark Flores officiating.
