Otis Isaac Megginson, Jr., 74 quietly passed away at his residence in Lynchburg, VA on May 15, 2016.
Born December 4, 1941, he was the son of the late Otis Isaac Megginson, Sr. and the late Antoinette Elaine Davis Anderson. Otis was a graduate of St. Emma Military Academy in Powhatan, VA; he proudly served his country in the United States Navy from 1961 to 1966, and was a veteran of the Vietnam War. For 27 years Otis worked as a Quality Assurance Inspector for the Department of Defense. And for over 20 years he was a faithful member of the Holy Cross Catholic Church community. Hardworking and humble, Otis took pleasure in the simple things in life — maintaining his yard, casting a fishing line, listening to jazz, and (for a time) hitting the links for a round of golf. He was known to have something of a sweet tooth, and enjoyed sharing a good joke. An eternal dog lover, Otis had a soft spot in his heart for Amber and Satin, his two devoted pooches.
Otis is survived by his loving wife of 48 years, Charlene Doris Blunt Megginson, his daughters, Ms. Felicia Megginson of Providence, RI and Mrs. Melanie Megginson (Brian Jackson) of Baton Rouge, LA; and two stepsisters, Mrs. Ina Anderson (Dana Gibson) of Kansas City, MO and Ms. Cyd McKenna of Washington, DC. Otis also leaves behind his goddaughter, Ms. Linda Monteiro of Cranston, RI, numerous cousins, in-laws, nieces and nephews, as well as countless friends.
In addition to his parents and grandparents, Otis was preceded in death by his maternal great aunt, Ruth Baratee Humbles, his paternal aunt Edith Megginson Chambers, his stepfather Leonard Anderson, and his godson Mack West Qualls, Jr.
A celebration of Otis’s life will be held at Holy Cross Catholic Church on Saturday, May 28,2016 at 11:00am with Monsignor J. Kenneth Rush officiating. The family will receive guests in the Commons an hour prior to the service. Interment will follow at the Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery, with military honors provided by American Legion Post-16.
