Owen Winfrey Smith, “Wimp,” 86, of Lynchburg, went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, May 4, 2019.

He was born May 12, 1932 in Lynchburg to Annie Louise Smith and Hubert Frederick Smith. He was the devoted husband to the late Carolyn Dunn Smith for 59 years.

He is survived by his three sons: Mark and his wife Robin, David, and Paul and his wife Linda. Grandchildren include Dana, Matthew, Zachary, Rachael and Katie all of whom affectionately call him, “Papa.” He is also survived by his brother-in-law, Eldridge Dunn, Jr.

Wimp attended Lynchburg College and served in the United States Navy from 1950 to 1954. He said he matured in the Navy. “I learned to stand on my feet and fight for my rights.” Wimp was a member of the Lynchburg Traffic Club and retired from Griffin Pipe after 38 years. Wimp enjoyed traveling the world with Carolyn, painting, watching sports, especially the Redskins, Cardinals, Hoos and Hokies. He also enjoyed fishing and family time. My family has and will be my pride and joy forever.”
