Patricia Carlson Johnson, 74, wife of Donald W. Johnson, of Madison Heights, died on Tuesday, October 22, 2013, at Lynchburg General Hospital.
Born April 11, 1939, in Jamestown, NY, she was a daughter of the late Frank Maynard Carlson, and the late Millicent Anderson Carlson.
Pat and Don met on a blind date, married on the fifth date, and were together for 54 years.
Pat accompanied Don (then an Army officer) to Germany in 1961. Two doctors had certified she could not have children, so she hired a lawyer to appeal the then German law stating the minimum age for adopting children was 45. She won, and they adopted Mark when he was but 30 days old. The adoption agency came to tell them they had found a set of twins the same day that the rabbit died. She was pregnant with Andy, who was born on December 11, 1962. Pat delivered Timothy on September 28, 1966 at the Fort Belvoir Army Hospital.
In addition to her husband Pat is survived by her children: Mark David Johnson and his wife, Nancy, Steven Andrew Johnson and his wife, Lorrie, and Timothy Eric Johnson and his wife, Tammy; grandchildren: Matthew and his wife, Mary Hannah, Jeffrey, Cristin and her husband, Jeremy Masters, Taylor, and Tyler; great grandsons: Elijah and Gideon; a sister, Marilyn McDonald, a brother, Ralph Carlson, and a dear friend, Catherine Marshall.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on Monday, October, 28, 2013 at Tharp Funeral Home, Madison Heights. A Memorial Service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, October 29, 2013, at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, with Pastor Dennis Roberts officiating. Inurnment will follow in the church columbarium.
