Paul Washington Cothran

Paul Washington Cothran, “P.W.”, 89, of Forest, Va. passed away on July 5, 2021 at his home.  He was the devoted husband of Lindie W. Cothran for 40 years.

Paul was born on August 27, 1931 in Campbell County, Va.  He graduated from Renan High School and obtained his Associate’s Degree from Central Virginia Community College in Draftsmanship.  Paul worked for J.H. Cothran Plumbing, The Lane Company, and Burlington Industries, in Altavista, Va. and Aluma Shield in Daytona Beach, Fl.  He was called into active duty in the Army with the Virginia National Guard during the Korean War, and he continued to serve in the National Guard Reserve until 1964.  Paul also volunteered with the Altavista Rescue Squad for many years.

Paul had a passion for flying airplanes, and owned three aircraft during his lifetime.  He also loved his Ultra Classic Harley-Davidson, and spent countless hours and miles riding it with his wife Lindie.

In addition to his wife, Paul is survived by his daughters, Dianne Cothran Travis (Randy), and Glenda Cothran Jones, both of Altavista, Va; step-daughters, Carol Smither Carr, of Wirtz, Va., and Sherry Smither Rosser, of Campbell County, Va.; his brother Garland Ronald Cothran (Barbara) and sister Thelma Cothran Booker; sister- in-law Faye Cothran; his grandchildren, Morgan Dillard (Peggy), Tyler Travis, and Trae Travis (Jennifer); and his step-grandchildren, Ben Edwards, Laura Hawkins, Kelly Hendricks (Derick), and Quinn Farris (Janezska); three great-grandchildren, and eight step-great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Paul was preceded in death by his parents, Jesse Garland Cothran and Pauline Thelma Dunn Cothran; his four brothers, William Leslie Cothran, Jesse Donald Cothran, James Franklin Cothran, and Kenneth Eli Cothran; and one sister, Virginia Cothran Turnes; his step-children, Kelly Smither and Larry Smither; his special cousin, Thomas Dunn; and a great-grandchild, Alexis Morgan Dillard.

A memorial service with military honors will be held at Tharp Funeral Home’s Chapel in Lynchburg on Saturday, July 10th, 2021 at 2 p.m.  The family will receive visitors at the residence at all other times.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to Bethany United Methodist Church in Forest, Va.

Tharp Funeral Home & Crematory, Lynchburg, is assisting the family.
