On Friday, August 19, 2016, Pauline S. Calloway departed this life. She was born the eldest of the ten children to Rueben and Pearl Spinner on December 11, 1925, in Bedford County, Virginia.
Pauline was educated in the Bedford County, Virginia, public schools. She graduated from Dunbar High School in 1947 and she enjoyed many years of being an active member of the Dunbar High School Class of 1947 Alumni Club. Dedicated to lifelong learning, Pauline, in the brave spirit she always exemplified, completed and earned her Associates Degree in Human Services from Central Virginia Community College, at the age of 63.
In life, whether in word or deed, Pauline was grounded in the name of Jesus. Her faith was strong and unwavering. At an early age, she accepted Christ as her Savior and was baptized at Holcomb Rock Baptist Church and became an active and dedicated member. Pauline participated in a number of Holcomb Rock’s committees and organizations, among which were the Twentieth Century Club, Willing Gospel Chorus, Willing Worker’s Club, and the Pastor’s Aide Club.
Pauline worked hard at church and home. She was devoted to helping others and visiting the sick. Pauline always wanted to be a nurse and as such she worked in areas that helped her to achieve that goal. Upon retiring from the Lynchburg Training Center, she began a new career as a home aide nurse to senior citizens with Gentiva Health Services. She worked there until she retired at the age of 78.
Pauline was a wonderful and excellent cook. She took pride and joy in preparing all types of dishes but desserts were her specialty. She was renowned for her Sweet Potato Pies, Lemon Pound Cakes, Peach Cobblers, and Hermit Cakes. If Pauline were around, you knew that nobody would ever go hungry!
Meaningful relationships were of the utmost importance to Pauline. Her commitment and valued love for her family, friends, and church, were undeniable! She was the rock, upon which many of us stood. No sacrifice was too big or small for her to make when it came to family and friends.
Pauline’s loving presence will forever linger as we carry on teachings, traditions, and all she meant to us in our hearts. She was preceded in death by her husband, George (Pete) Calloway. She leaves to cherish many wonderful and precious memories, her devoted three children, Paula P. Robinson, Daniel B. Calloway, Melvin A. Calloway (Robbin); her beloved grandsons, Raphael and Jahdal Calloway (Charmane) and granddaughter, Taylor A. Calloway; one brother, Keith Spinner (Edna); three sisters, Ruby Wade, Marie Cook, and Naomi Buckmaster (Kevin); four sisters-in-law, Virginia Johnson, Olivia Williams, Odessa Calloway, and Maxine Calloway, and many nieces, nephews, and a host of relatives and lifelong friends that she treasured.
A celebration of Pauline’s life will be held Saturday, August 27, 2016 at 4 p.m. at Holcomb Rock Baptist Church. The family will receive friends one hour prior at the church. Tharp Funeral Home & Crematory, Lynchburg, is assisting the family.
