Peter Dunlop, beloved husband, father, grandfather and gifted engineer passed away September 26, 2022, with his children by his side.
Born Derk Jan Pieter terHorst on 24 July 1941 in Hengelo, Netherlands, he came through Ellis Island with his mother in 1946 to make a new home in Castlegar, British Columbia. He attended the University of British Columbia where he met and married, Diane, his wife and best friend of 58 years. Together they moved to California where he received his PhD in Civil Engineering from U.C. Berkeley.
For many years the Dunlop family made their home in Huntington, New York where Peter worked for the engineering firm Stone & Webster and then the Port Authority of NY & NJ. He also coached his kid’s sports teams, was a scout master, and loved spending quality time in the outdoors, camping, canoeing, fishing and hiking with family and friends. Peter and Diane eventually retired to Lynchburg to be near their son, daughter-in-law and grandsons.
Peter loved and guided his family, providing unconditional support to his wife, his children, and his grandchildren to ensure they had what they needed to reach their full potential in life. He had the great gifts of service, love, kindness (with an infectious smile and twinkle in his eye), and a remarkable engineering-minded approach to solving any problem before him.
He will be greatly missed by his daughter Dawn; son and daughter-in-law, Mike and Sarah; grandsons, Connor, Andrew and Owen; relatives in British Columbia; and the lifelong friends whose lives he touched and in whom he found much joy.
The family would like to express their deep gratitude to the caring staff of Westminster Canterbury, who provided expert health care and loving support to both Dad and Mom through this difficult time.
We’d like to especially thank the wonderful Memory Support and 6th floor Hearthside teams for getting to know Dad personally, and helping ensure his highest quality of life each day. We’d also like to express our gratitude to the many friends and staff who have stopped to share a wonderful memory or photo of Dad, and who have encouraged and uplifted Mom during this most difficult time.
Tharp Funeral Home, Lynchburg is assisting the family.
