Peter V. Daniel

Peter Vivian Daniel died December 12, 2013 in Lynchburg. Mr. Daniel was the son of the late Katharine Verner Daniel and the late Channing Williams Daniel.

He was predeceased by his wife Lydia Cruikshank Daniel, his sister Helen Daniel Rodman, and his brothers: William V. Daniel and Channing W. Daniel.

Mr. Daniel is survived by his sons Peter Vivian Daniel, Jr., of Wilton, CT, and Dabney Maury Daniel and his wife, Margaret Perry Daniel of Atlanta, GA; two grandsons: Peter McLane Daniel and William Penn Daniel, and a sister-in-law Lucy Kellogg Daniel of Richmond, VA.

He was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and graduated from the Haverford School. He served in World War II in the Air Force as a navigator, bombardier and radar operator. After graduating from the University of Virginia in 1949, he was employed by Chase National Bank in New York as a Foreign Service Management Trainee and later by State Planter\"™s Bank in Richmond, Virginia. In 1954, he joined the administration of Sweet Briar College as Treasurer and Assistant to the President. In 1971, he became Vice President, and Treasurer of Sweet Briar. Upon his retirement in 1986, he was awarded the title of Vice President and Treasurer Emeritus.

In 1975, Mr. Daniel and his wife began restoring an old farm of 120 acres on the Tye River in Amherst County, where they raised cattle and beagle dogs for conformation shows. They lived at the restored farm until 1995, when they moved to Lynchburg. Mr. Daniel was active in Amherst community affairs as a member of the Amherst Rotary Club and the Amherst County Area Development Association, as Senior Warden of Ascension Episcopal Church in Amherst, and as a Board member of the Humane Society of Amherst County and the Amherst Office of Central Fidelity Bank. He chaired the Amherst County Recreation Committee, the Amherst County Chamber of Commerce and the Amherst County Litter Commission. Mr. Daniel was a member of the Executive Committee and Small College Committee of the Eastern Association of College and University Business Officers and served on the Boards of the Greater Lynchburg Chamber of Commerce, St. Paul\"™s College, St. Mary\"™s College, Seven Hills School and Virginia Episcopal School. During his retirement, Mr. Daniel served on the Advisory Board of the Academy Theatre in Lynchburg and the Jones Memorial Library Board and the Sister City in Lynchburg Plus Board. In 1988 he was Consultant and Acting Treasurer of Randolph Macon Women\"™s College, now Randolph College. In addition to his civic involvement during his retirement, Mr. Daniel took up painting, a new talent encouraged by his association with the art faculty of Sweet Briar College, for which he was most grateful. He exhibited and sold a number of his paintings. In 2002, Mr. and Mrs. Daniel moved to Westminster Canterbury in Lynchburg, where he served on the Employee Educational Assistance Committee, the Performance Oversight Committee, and the Westminster Canterbury Foundation Board.

A Celebration of Peter\"™s Life will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, January 18, 2013 at Westminster Canterbury, 501 VES Road, Lynchburg, with the Rev. Diane E. Vie officiating.
