Philip Paul Thompson, Jr., 72, of Bedford and formerly of Stafford County, died Wednesday, July 7, 2010 in Lynchburg General Hospital. Born July 23, 1937 in Trenton, New Jersey, a son of the late Sonya and Philip Paul Thompson, Sr. In addition to his parents, Philip was preceded in death by a brother, Richard D. Thompson.
Philip was a communicant of Holy Name of Mary Catholic Church. He served in the U.S. Air Force and he retired from the U.S. Department of Justice as a computer analyst with over 25 years of service. He was also a sports fan of golf and tennis but most of all an avid Redskins fan.
Philip is survived by his wife of 46 years, Elisabeth Hoch Thompson; a daughter, Sonia C. Blahna and husband, Lt. Col. (Ret) Roy Blahna of Westfield, IN; a son, Philip G. Thompson and wife, Nancy of Bedford; a brother, John \"Jack\" W. Thompson of Cheswick, PA; five grandchildren, Elisabeth C. Yousef and husband, Safa, Stephanie M. Moreno and husband, Jose, Matthew C. Thompson, Michael J. Thompson and Katherine P. Thompson; and two great-grandchildren, Isabella Moreno and Anthony Yousef.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association, 4504 Starkey Road, Roanoke, VA 24018.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be said at 11 AM, Saturday, July 10, 2010 at Resurrection Catholic Church with Father Salvador Añonuevo celebrant. Burial will follow in Greenwood Cemetery with military graveside rites given by American Legion Post #16. The family will receive friends from 6-8 PM, Friday, July 9, 2010 at Tharp Funeral Home & Crematory, Bedford, 586-3443.
