Philip Thomas Thurmond

Philip Thomas Thurmond passed away peacefully Wednesday, March 2, 2011 at his home in Lynchburg, VA. He was deeply loved and was always thankful for the blessings of family. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather.

Born Tuesday, June 15, 1920 in Lynchburg, VA, Philip was a son the late Russell M. Thurmond and Lilian Stevens Thurmond.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 68 years, Jane Ransone Thurmond; brothers, Russell (Tim), Tucker, William, Robert, and Lanier; and a sister, Lilian.

Philip is survived by his son, Philip Thomas Thurmond, Jr. and wife Mary Sue, of Richmond; his daughters, Mary Page Pettyjohn, of Lynchburg, and Elizabeth S. Cable and her husband, Andrew of Richmond; his devoted grandchildren; Philip Thomas Thurmond, III, and his wife, Annah, of Greenville, SC, Clunet H. Pettyjohn, III and his wife, Brooke, of Lynchburg VA, Laura Page Kangas and her husband, David, of Richmond, VA, W. Walker Pettyjohn and his wife, Shannon, of Roanoke, VA, Elizabeth Page Birney and her husband, John, of Towson, MD, and Tyler Stevens Cable, of Richmond, VA; step grandchildren, Andrea Cable Celis, Shawn B. McGrath and Kevin D. McGrath; great grandchildren, Olivia Thurmond, Davis Thurmond, McKenna Pettyjohn, Clunet Pettyjohn, IV, Mary Macon Pettyjohn, Luke Kangas, Brady Kangas, Jack Birney, and Carter Birney; step great grandchildren, Connor McGrath, Devin McGrath, Kevin McGrath, and Morgan McGrath.

Phil was a veteran of WWII having received a Purple Heart after being wounded in January, 1945 at the Battle of the Bulge. He served as a past President of the Lynchburg Jaycees, the Lynchburg Board of Realtors, past Vice President of the Virginia Association of Realtors and Past Dean of the Virginia Realtors Institute at the University of Virginia. He served on the Board of Equalization for a number of years. He was a member of American Legion Post 16. He founded the real estate firm Smith and Thurmond in the 1970\"™s. His love of hunting, fishing, golf, and playing cards with his friends at Oakwood Country Club was only surpassed by his love for his wife and his family.

The family will receive friends from to 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. on Friday, March 4, 2011 at Tharp Funeral Home, Lynchburg, and at other times at the residence. A funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 5, 2011 at First Presbyterian Church with the Dr. John Scholer officiating. Interment will follow in Spring Hill Cemetery, with military honors provided by American Legion Post 16.
