Phillip Graydon Cocks, 75, of Lynchburg, went to be with his Savior on Friday, December 2, 2016, at his home after a courageous challenge with cancer.
Born May 29, 1941, in Lynchburg, Phillip was the son of the late Arlene Clark Cocks and Elwood Whitfield “William” Cocks. He is survived by his wife of 54 years Barbara Gilliam Cocks; a daughter, Rita Cocks Walker and her husband, Steven Edward Walker, of Goode; a son, Jeffrey Phillip Cocks and wife Kristie Mitchell Cocks, of Brookneal; a sister, Judith Cocks Parker and husband Bobby Parker, of Gladys; and three grandsons, Jacob Scott Walker and wife Stephanie Crouch Walker, Phillip Braxton Cocks and Matthew Drake Cocks.
He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church on Timberlake Road. He was an avid golfer, loved bluegrass music, playing cards with his friends and catering barbeques. He was a carpet installer for 20 years with Hamilton’s Cabinet Shop and self-employed, Lynchburg Foundry, Taylor Brother’s, and retired as owner of Lynchburg Disposal Co. His passion after retirement, was starting Phil’s Barbeque where he met many lasting friends.
Phillip was a people person that never met a stranger. He was blessed with many loving and caring friends.
He and the family were so blessed and grateful for all the love and support of the many friends. He would with every visit, comment about having such “good friends”. Special thanks go to Dr. MacCallum and the nurses at the Allen B. Pearson Cancer Center, Diane and Gentle Shepherds Home Health Care, Rebecca and Centra Hospice, and family and friends who took care of his needs during his illness.
A visitation will be held at Tharp Funeral Home, Lynchburg, on Tuesday, December 6, 2016, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. A Celebration of Phillip’s Life will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, December 7, 2016, at Calvary Baptist Church 20957 Timberlake Road, with Rev. Louis Beckwith and Rev. Rick Foster. officiating.
