Phyllis Conaway

d. October 1, 2021

Phyllis “Mamasan” Conaway was reunited with her Savior on October 1, 2021, surrounded by love. Phyllis is survived by her three children; Melvin Leroy Toman, Martha Triplett (Keith), Cosette Conaway (Michael Smith), Five grandchildren; Melvin Toman (Tracy), Michelle Toman Hudson, Brian Triplett (Georgette), Kevin Triplett, and Sarah Conaway (Chuck McCombie). She is also survived by great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

Phyllis went to work at age 13 during the Depression, embracing a strong work ethic that would follow her the rest of her life. In her twenties, she finally agreed to attend a tent revival to satisfy the requests of her aunt, and it was there the course of her life would change forever–she went to the altar and gave her life to Jesus. It was a story she would relay to many people: Phyllis never met a stranger and loved to share her passion for the Lord.

Later in life, she married Pastor Beal Conaway and together they started The Lighthouse Foursquare Church. It was her dream that ushered in the church’s vision to have a fully racially integrated church, which quickly came into fruition. Phyllis led worship at the church for many years and took great pride in the diverse relationships she cultivated. She lit up a room with her infectious laugh and unedited candor.

Phyllis was exceptionally resilient. Despite a number of health issues throughout her life, she often out-bowled the men, loved to fish, had an exceptional green thumb, and beat family and friends at Scrabble games. She loved to bargain shop and most of the ladies at Belk knew her by name. Later in life, she had an avid Facebook following as she went on adventures with her granddaughter and shared her humor and wisdom. People all over the world eagerly anticipated what “Grandscrew” would get into next and she never disappointed.

Phyllis’s family will celebrate her life at a graveside service on Thursday 2:00 pm October 7, 2021 at the Spring Hill Cemetery. Rev. Rick Brafford will be officiating. The family would like to invite all to attend and share in her memory.

Tharp Funeral Home & Crematory, Lynchburg, is assisting the family.
