Phyllis Catherine Nodland, 79, of Smith Mountain Lake Virginia, passed away peacefully into the arms of the Lord on Monday August 29, 2016 while surrounded by her loving family. Phyllis is predeceased by her parents, Clarence and Doris Lynard and sister Mary Jo Schumacher.
She was born and raised in Minnesota, Phyllis began her career as an administrative assistant at the Mayo Clinic, Rochester, MN. She later attended Mankato State University, Mankato, MN. She and her husband Sam were actively involved with the Gemini space capsule program at Cape Canaveral, Florida. Following the start of their family, each enjoyed the challenge and adventure of living in several parts of the country ensuing Sam’s career. An avid reader and devoted Grandmother, Phyllis loved retirement at SML. Special activities would include cards with the neighborhood card club, spending time with her sorority sisters of Beta Sigma Phi and boating on SML. She had fond memories of their travels abroad as well as throughout the US. Her many friends at home and across the country are a tribute to her kind, generous and loving nature.
Phyllis is survived by her husband of 58 years, Arlend (Sam) Nodland; sons, Jeffrey and Kathy of Denver, CO, Craig and Meredith of Charlotte, NC, and Sean of Arlington, VA; and Sister Patricia Alwan of Meadow Vista, CA. She was blessed with 4 beautiful grandchildren, Trevor, Alyssa, Brady and Cooper.
Phyllis’s memorial service and celebration of her life will take place at 2:00pm, Friday September 16, 2016 at Trinity Ecumenical Parish with Pastor Phillip A. Bouknight officiating
