Phyllis Martin Denton, 78, of Lynchburg, passed away quietly with loved ones by her side on Saturday, July 21, 2012 at Lynchburg General Hospital. She was the wife of the late Albert (A.G.) Gilson Denton.
Born July, 13, 1934 in Lynchburg, she was the daughter of the late Carral Edward Martin and Maria Elizabeth Woodson. She just celebrated her 78th birthday.
Phyllis was employed by Nationwide Insurance for 42 years before retiring. While retired, she returned to work whenever needed. In her retirement, she always put family and friends before herself, and was always there to lend a helping hand as was evident by her commitment to the American Legion Women\"™s Auxiliary where she served in many capacities. Phyllis also worked many hours at the V.A. Hospital in Salem for our veterans, as well as served in many capacities for the Lynchburg Toast Mistress Club.
Phyllis is survived by her two daughters: Kimberly D. Arthur and her husband, Allen, and Tamara D. Smoot and her husband, Todd: three grandchildren; \"Allen Dale\" Arthur, Jr., \"Michael\" Taylor Arthur, and James \"Tyler\" Smoot: and two great granddaughters: Delaney Nicole Arthur, and Madison Chasteen Godsey. She is also survived by one sister, Shirley Floyd (Johnny); and a sister-in-law and friend, Bettie Mayberry; nieces Tara Floyd Wilmer (David), Donna Denton Keesee (Richard), Stacy Denton Arthur (Gary); and nephews Derek Denton, Travis Wilmer (Sarah), Logan Wilmer and Kyle Wilmer (Alisa). Phyllis is also survived by close cousins Jones Elliott, Iris Woodson Caldwell (Clarence), and Caryn Caldwell Brown (Lee).
Phyllis also had a dear friend she loved to visit in Florida, Marion Novak, and a close circle of friends; Betty Toller, Bonnie Crews, Vivian Burley, Geraldine Robertson, and the late Dolores Smith.
She had many close and dear friends too numerous to name, in various circles including, Timberlake Christian Church, American Legion Women\"™s Auxiliary, Nationwide Insurance and the Lunch Bunch.
In addition to her husband and parents, Phyllis is preceded in death by a grandchild, Jonathan D. Arthur.

The family will receive friends from 7:00 to 9:00 on Wednesday, July 25, 2012 at Tharp Funeral Home, Lynchburg. A Celebration of Phyllis\"™s life and Faith will be conducted Thursday, July 26, 2012, at 11:00 AM at Tharp Funeral Home, Lynchburg, with the Rev. Pastor Bob Mooty officiating. Interment will follow in Fort Hill Memorial Park.
