Phyllis Lucado Smith died suddenly December 23, 2024.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years Ralph H. Smith, Sr. She was the daughter of the late John Miller and Elma Marsh Lucado.
She retired from the Commonwealth of Virginia and the County of Appomattox. She was a faithful member of Thomas Terrace Baptist Church, where she sang in the choir and performed solos.
She was an avid reader and belonged to many book clubs. She liked to travel and, as a couple, they took many bus trips up and down the East Coast sightseeing and attending baseball games. She also liked to support her Dallas Cowboys even though Ralph was a Redskins fan.
She was always ready to cook a meal for the family or go out to eat on a moment's notice. Family was a strong bond, and she checked on "the kids" up to her final days, asking about their jobs and lives.
Phyllis is survived by her children, Martha Reynolds, R. Harold Smith, Jr. (Laura), and Amy Davis (Larry); her grandchildren, Michelle Pessarra (Aaron), Amanda Ney (Eric), Allyson Waddell (John), Sarah Nichols (Daniel), and Lauren Brown (Josh); other grandchildren: Brittany Lamm (Tara) and Cody White; her great-grandchildren, Carl, Sydney and Travis Pessarra, Titus (Hannah), Tenaya and Topanga Ney, Audrey Nichols, J.J. Waddell; and her sister, Patricia Phelps.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sisters, Louise Brooks, Dorothy Lindsay, and Marion Williams; brothers, John Miller Lucado Jr., Robert Lucado, and Eugene Lucado; and son-in-law, Ray Reynolds.
A funeral service will be held on Saturday, December 28, 2024, at 11 a.m. in the chapel of Tharp Funeral Home & Crematory, Lynchburg. A visitation will be held one hour prior to the service. Interment will follow at New Hope Baptist Church in Appomattox, VA.
