Phyllis Virginia Matthews, 97, died January 23, 2010 in Guggenheimer Nursing Home. She was born in Lynchburg, Virginia on January 26, 1913, the daughter of Robert Carl and Emma Thomas Matthews. She was a long-time member of Memorial Methodist Church and later, Park View Methodist Church. Miss Matthews was a retired legal secretary.
In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by two sisters, Carlene Page and her husband, Garland and Doris Doggette and her husband, Lewis; two brothers, Robert R. Matthews and William P. Matthews and one nephew, Robert "Corkey" Matthews.
Miss Matthews is survived by the following nieces and nephews: Garland Page Jr. and his wife, Billie; Thomas Page and his wife, Phyllis; Ellen Stolpman and her husband, Ronald; Christine Beren; John Doggette and his wife, Karen; William Doggette and his wife, Marsha; Martha Lawrence and her husband Dale; Brenda Robertson and her husband, Mike; Michael Matthews and his wife, Janie; Patrick Matthews and his wife, Sally; Carl Matthews and his wife, Brenda and a sister-in-law, Alice Matthews and also numerous grand nieces and nephews.
Miss Matthews was a tireless volunteer for many local programs. She spent over 20,000 hours as a volunteer at Lynchburg General Hospital which is a record. Known for her knitting, she knit hundreds of sweaters and blankets for friends, family and various charities. She worked regularly at the Red Cross Blood Mobile and local soup kitchens.
Except for several declining years spent at Guggenheimer Nursing Home, she lived her entire life in her family home at 1508 Fifteenth Street in Lynchburg, where she was delivered by her father on a cold, snowy, January nigh when the doctor could not get there.
Miss Matthews has requested that memorial gifts be made to The Salvation Army at Post Office Box Number 2314, Lynchburg, Virginia 29501.
Miss Matthews has left her body to science. A visitation will be held Friday, February 12 at 2:00 pm. at Park View Methodist Church. A memorial service will follow at 3:00 p.m. with the Rev. Phillip Showers officiating.
