Robert Harry Alvis, III, 66, of Lynchburg died Saturday, February 7 at his home. Harry courageously battled a neuromuscular disease for many years, but succumbed to cancer.

Harry was a graduate of Lynchburg College. He enjoyed careers as a Builder, Realtor, and professional photographer.

Harry was born October 5, 1948, in Lynchburg, VA. He is survived by his loved and devoted wife Merle Talley Alvis, his son Robert H. Alvis IV (Bob), two special granddaughters Anna Elizabeth Alvis and Kathryn Isabell Alvis (Katie); sisters-in-law Dale T. Morris and Ann T. Reid, (Don), niece Lisa Hankla, nephews Al Hankla, Allen Morris, Tim Reid, Andrew Reid, and Michael Reid. Harry was predeceased by his parents Roberts Harry Alvis, Jr. and Ann McKenna Alvis and by sister-in-law June T. Hankla.

Harry often said “any day you don’t learn something new is a wasted day.” He used every opportunity to instill a “yearning for learning” in Anna and Katie, who considered him their special homework helper.

The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 pm on Tuesday, February 10, 2015 at Tharp Funeral Home, Lynchburg. A celebration of Harry’s life will be conducted at 3 pm on Wednesday, February 11 at Tharp Funeral Home, with the Reverend Janet Hawkins officiating.

Memorial contributions may be made in memory of Harry to The Alan B. Pearson Cancer Center, 1701 Thomson Drive, Lynchburg, VA 24501; Centra Hospice, 2097 Langhorne Road, Lynchburg, VA 24501; or a charity of your choice.
