Rachel M. Singleton

Rachel M. Singleton, died on December 1, 2021, after a slow, but relentless decline in health, following a stroke suffered in 2005. She carried herself with grace and dignity in spite of her many physical limitations, and maintained her sense of humor and joyful spirit into her last days.

Born on November 27, 1930 in Campbell County, she had just celebrated her 91st birthday. She was the daughter of the late Sadie Daniel McCraw and Paul Little McCraw. She was preceded in death by her husband, Alvin William Singleton, a daughter, Marsha R. Singleton, and her three brothers, William, David, and Rudell McCraw.

Rachel leaves to cherish her memory her daughter, Teresa Antonelli, and husband Tom, three grandchildren, Blair Evans Hoke (Christiansburg), William “Hunter” Singleton (Jackson, WY) and Thomas “Gray” Antonelli (Richmond). She is also survived by her stepson, Steven L. Singleton (Susie), a nephew, three nieces, and two great grandchildren.

A country girl at heart, Rachel cherished all things southern, including beauty salons visits, classic country music, gardening and home cooked meals. She was a fabulous cook whose fried chicken, mac and cheese, and deviled eggs were legendary. Musically gifted as well, she could play the guitar and piano “by ear”. She was always fashionably and elegantly dressed – never a hair out of place.

A natural athlete, she excelled in basketball and softball in her youth, and later in life, was an avid tennis player. She loved ACC basketball, especially UVA, and those who knew her best did not dare disturb her during March Madness, Grand Slam tennis tournaments or the Masters.

Rachel’s generosity was unrivaled. Those lucky enough to be in her circle of friends, neighbors, and of course, family, were the recipients of the most thoughtful gifts. She also supported many local charitable organizations and schools, most notably the Lynchburg Humane Society, the Miller Home and James River Day School. She was genuinely caring and kind, full of compassion for those less fortunate or facing difficult circumstances.

As wife to Al for over 30 years, she supported him in the many stages of his career, and kept things going at home while he traveled the world on business. She grew to love the life of travel and entertaining as the spouse of a busy executive. When he passed away suddenly at 64, she was comfortable in her role as a fiercely independent widow.

A long-time member of Peakland United Methodist Church – Rachel loved volunteering in the office and was an enthusiastic supporter of all things PUMC. She took great comfort in the ongoing support of her faith community and was sustained by their many home visits over the years.

Finally, the family would like to thank her long-term caregivers, Sue Evans, Juanita Woolfolk, and Tammi Williams, as well as many others, who offered her friendship and loving care over the past 16 years. Additionally, much gratitude is extended to Betty and her caring staff at Edley Place, especially Tine, Ann and Mona (Lisa) for rallying around Rachel in these final weeks. The love she and the family felt from each of you was a blessing.

A Celebration of Life service for Rachel will be held at a later date. Friends who wish to donate in her honor, please consider The Lynchburg Humane Society, The Miller Home, Meals on Wheels, or a charity of choice.
