Ralph Etherington, 87, of Lynchburg, died Wednesday, November 23, 2016, at Lynchburg General Hospital. His wife Barbara survives him.
He was born in Providence, R.I. the son of the late James E. and Hazel M. Etherington and is survived by a son James S. Etherington, of Carlisle, Iowa; a daughter, Susan L. Etherington Johnson, of Gainesville, Va.; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
He was a licensed extra class amateur radio operator, KK4VZ.
He graduated from the University of Rhode Island with a BS degree in Electrical Engineering and is a member of the Tau Beta Pi Honorary Society. He served his Country in the U. S. Marine Corps.
He was employed for 35 years by the General Electric Mobile Radio Communications Business in Syracuse, N.Y. and Lynchburg, Va., and was granted four patents in his career. After retiring at the end of 1989, he hiked the Appalachian Trail end-to-end in 1990.
