Ralph Russell Schneider, Jr.

June 11, 1947 — November 23, 2023

Lynchburg

Ralph Russell Schneider, Jr. passed away at Lynchburg General Hospital with family at his side on November 23, 2023. He was born June 11, 1947 to the late Ralph Russell Schneider and Evelyn “Peggy” Tipton Schneider in Bridgeport, CT.

Russell spent most of his youth in Roanoke, VA, where he graduated from Patrick Henry High School. He was an Eagle Scout. He earned a bachelor’s degree in Accounting from Virginia Commonwealth University, and a master’s degree in Business Administration from the College of William and Mary.

Most of Russell’s working career was in the automotive industry, and he was at one time a member of the Society of Automotive Engineers. He worked first for Ford and later for Isuzu Truck of America. Regardless of the project he was assigned, he was recognized for his diligence, attention to detail and strong work ethic. In his retirement years he became a “Red Hat” (a supervisory position on a worksite) as a volunteer with Habitat for Humanity in Maryland, volunteered with the Boy Scouts, and worked part-time for Home Depot, where he worked in hardware and developed strong friendships.

Known for his keen interest in economics and developing countries, he often attended events at the Mises Institute and was at one time a member of the Philadelphia Council of Business Economists. He was accepted to the Ph.D. program in economics at Auburn University. He was technical-minded and loved complex subjects like computers, engines and construction. He could create and repurpose items for everyday use from materials he found around the house. He was sensitive to the needs and challenges of those less fortunate and was an advocate of helping others, specifically those who had been unjustly treated. He enjoyed casual conversation with close friends, and even at times, strangers in waiting areas, and loved animals, especially dogs.

As a father, he is remembered for his exceptional creativity and love for music. Much to their excitement, he frequently told his young daughters bedtime stories centered around a town and characters he had created. He played the piano and guitar for his young daughter as she eagerly danced along, and he was always quick to brighten and recognize the beat and tune to one of his favorite songs, regardless of where or when it played. He valued education and was naturally curious and encouraged his children, despite challenges, to earn college degrees and to pursue their interests.

He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Suzanne Johnson Schneider, two daughters: Carrie (Russ) Romberger and Ann Schneider, two grandsons: Ryan and Jake Romberger and one sister, Carolyn (John) Boliek as well as numerous friends.

As a tribute to Russell, his family asks that you focus on the goodness in the world, stand against injustice, help the less fortunate, and whenever and wherever possible, enjoy music. Donations may be made in his memory to Habitat for Humanity.

A celebration of Russell’s life will be held privately.
