Ralphine Coffey Overstreet

April 20, 1915 — March 22, 2017

Ralphine Coffey Overstreet passed away on Wednesday, March 22, 2017, at her home in Forest, Virginia, at the age of 101. Born April 20, 1915, in Bedford County, she was the last survivor of the nine children of Hugh Davis Coffey and Lillian Cox Coffey. She was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, Maurice Gank Overstreet; her granddaughter, Elizabeth Hope Lee; and her son-in-law, H. Clark Lee. She is survived by her daughters, Carol Lee of Forest and Anne Gerhardt (Tom) of Lynchburg. Surviving also are her six grandchildren, Melissa Mitchell (Glenn) of Walnut Cove, NC, Jonathan Lee of Forest, Carter Lee of Lynchburg, Troy Gerhardt (Lisa) of Fort Collins, CO, Erich Gerhardt (Julie) of Lynchburg and Graham Gerhardt (Emily) of Birmingham, AL. She is survived by seven great-grandchildren: Bryson and Ethan Gerhardt, Sara Anne “Lilli”, Finley and Quincy Gerhardt, Amber Harris (Lee) of Pfafftown, NC and Jordan Mitchell of Walkertown, NC; and two great-great-grandchildren, Christian and Chloe Harris. A very special Niece, Donna Harman Templeton of Marietta, GA. Also surviving her is a special friend and “adopted” sister, Annice Williams.

Ralphine was the cafeteria manager at Brookhill Elementary School for many years. Students there still recall her goulash, homemade bread, and preacher candy. She was a lifelong member of Bethany United Methodist Church in Forest. She served in many positions at Bethany. Every Sunday, all the children at Bethany would gather around her for a hug and, if it was their birthday, a little green surprise. She especially enjoyed her service in the United Methodist Women. Ralphine was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, friend to all, and a faithful servant of Jesus Christ.

Her family would like to thank her caregivers for their excellent assistance over the last few years. They were attentive to her needs and encouraged her to work hard to do things for herself.

A celebration of her life will be held Saturday, March 25, 2017, at Bethany Church with visitation at 10:00 a.m, service at 11:00 a.m., and a luncheon to follow. Rev. Dr. H.O. Tom Thomas will preside at the service. She will be buried in Virginia Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Bethany United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 12, Forest, VA 24551.
