Ray Douglas Massie, 80, of Big Island, went to be with the Lord on Friday, June 28, 2024 at Lynchburg General Hospital. He was born in Lynchburg on January 18, 1944 to the late Radford McNeil Massie and Audrey Fifer Massie. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his son, Mark Hunter Massie and grandson, Ryan Hunter Massie.
Ray had a natural talent for mechanics and could fix anything. He was a lifetime member of the Big Island Volunteer Fire Department. Ray was also a member at Hunting Creek Baptist Church and recently attended Big Island Baptist Church. Ray was given the title as Mayor of Big Island and took that job very seriously. He loved his country and was proud to be an Air Force Veteran.
He is survived by his wife, Margaret Knight Massie; son, Douglas Massie and wife, Kim; granddaughter, Elizabeth Massie; brothers, Neal Massie and wife, Faye and Keith Massie and wife, Phronia and sister, Ann Brundage and husband, Jerry.
The family would like to extend a special thanks to the Medical ICU Department, Medical Staff and Chaplin Laura at Lynchburg General Hospital for the special care that they gave Ray.
A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, July 2, 2024, at Big Island Baptist Church with the Rev. Ian Minielly and Rev. Ken Bledsoe officiating. Burial will follow at Big Island Cemetery. The family will receive friends Monday, July 1, 2024, at Big Island Baptist Church from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m.
