Raymond Edward Sward, 83, of Lynchburg, VA, passed away Monday, July 22, 2013. He was the loving husband of the late Mary Suddith Torrence Sward for 35 years. He was born March 16, 1930 in St. Paul, MN, a son of the late Edward August Sward and the late Anna Mae Piel Sward.
Ray is survived by his stepdaughters: Judy Torrence Waterworth Arthur and husband, Lewis, of Lynchburg, and Janet Torrence Camden and husband, Starke, of Elon; a son, Michael Lewis Sward, of Medisto, Ca, and two sisters: Edna Gladys Hauger, of Pine City, MN, and June Bernice LaBarr, of Maplewood, MN, his six grandchildren; Chad Waterworth and wife Katie, Deedy Waterworth Cleland and husband Rob, Torrie Camden, Courtney Camden, Shane Torrence and wife Stacy, and Hunter Torrence; his nine great grandchildren: John, Anna, and Sally Waterworth, Hunter, Taylor, and Barkley Cleland, Ava Jordan, Carter, and Windsor Torrence; and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to his wife and parents, Ray was preceded in death by a son Raymond Edward Sward, Jr. and a stepson, Gary Frank Torrence.
Ray was a career military man, serving 21 years in the US Navy, serving during both the Korean and Vietnam War. Retiring from the military, Ray moved to Lynchburg and while working for Gould Battery and eventually started his career in real estate. Ray was a Past Master with Hill City Masonic Lodge #183 A.F. & A.M., a member of the Scottish Rite, and the Shriners Kazim Temple in Roanoke. An active member of Fort Hill United Methodist Church, Ray especially loved singing in the choir. Ray possessed a true spirit of giving and helped with Meals on Wheels and was an \"ambassador\" for The Summit, where he lovingly volunteered.
The family will receive friends at 10:00 AM on Friday, July 26, 2013 at Tharp Funeral Home & Crematory, Lynchburg. A celebration of Raymond's life will follow at 11:00 AM on Friday, July 26, 2013 at Tharp with Rev. Janet Hawkins officiating. Burial will follow in Fort Hill Memorial Park.
