Raymond Gould Haymaker

Raymond Gould Haymaker, 92, of Vinton, died Sunday, June 3, 2012 at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital. He was born April 8, 1920 in Alleghany County, VA, a son of the late Minnie Pearl Arritt Haymaker and Albert Marion Haymaker.

In addition to his parents, Raymond was preceded in death by his wife, Della Elizabeth Jordan Haymaker; brothers, Otho N. Haymaker and Kenneth G. Haymaker; and a sister, Dorothy M. Haymaker. He is survived by a special friend and loving companion, Sarah Thurman of Vinton; a son, Kenneth R. Haymaker and his wife, Anita of Clifton Forge; two grandchildren Michael Haymaker and his wife, Christie of Bedford, IN and Christopher Haymaker and his wife, Leah of Iron Gate, VA; four great-grandchildren, Heather Haymaker of Bedford, IN, Robert Haymaker of St. Louis, MO, Patrick Haymaker and Alexis Haymaker both of Iron Gate, VA; a cousin, W.M. Young of Covington, VA; special friends, Lorraine and Ray Judd, Elaine and Jim Gilbertson, Helen and Harry Reeves, and all of his friends at the SML State Park.

Raymond was a member of Longdale United Methodist Church. He was a retiree of Westvaco with over 44 years of service. He was a veteran of the US Army Air Corps during WWII, having flown on D-Day to attack the Southern Coast of France in order to confuse the enemy. Raymond obtained his civilian license to fly in 1949. He was also a member of the Model A Ford Club of Christiansburg, Roanoke and Lynchburg Chapter of AACA; SML Ruritan Club, Bedford Masonic Lodge #224, SML Pilots Club, SML Moose Lodge #2346 and VFW Peaks of Otter Post #215.

A memorial service will be conducted at 11 AM, Saturday, June 23, 2012 at Staunton Baptist Church, Huddleston, with Dr. John Reale officiating.
