Raymond Maxwell “Max” Meador , 80, of Forest, Virginia passed away at Westminster Canterbury on Tuesday , December 22, 2015. Born on November 17, 1935, he was the son of the late Charles Raymond Meador and Marion Goode Meador of Bedford, VA. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Jacqueline Harper Meador. He is also survived by his son , Raymond Maxwell “Randy” Meador, Jr., and his wife , Elaine of Franklin, TN and his daughter, Kimberley Meador Jennings and her husband, Arthur of Maidens, Va., and his grandchildren, Jacqueline Brooke Meador and Arthur Ryland “Rylee” Jennings , IV.
Max grew up in Bedford, VA where he graduated from Bedford High School in 1954. He was a 1958 alumnus of Hampden-Sydney College where he obtained a Bachelor of Science degree, was a member of the Kappa Alpha Fraternity, and the Patrick Henry Society. Returning to the Hampden-Sydney campus was special to him, and he attended the Summer College there for 23 years. Max earned a Masters of Education Degree with an emphasis on Latin from the University of Virginia in 1968.
Max’s entire career took place at Virginia Episcopal School where he taught Latin for forty-four years. The extent of his academic learning, coaching expertise, and administrative reliability is evident in the diversity of his responsibilities and the tributes presented to him. During his tenure at VES, he served as Assistant Headmaster, Dean of Students, Foreign Language Chairman, Chairman of the disciplinary and Advisory Committees, faculty advisor to the Honor Committee and Counselor body, Junior Varsity football and Varsity baseball coach. He was named Virginia Prep League Coach of the Year in 1977 and again in 1984. He also served for a time as VES Athletic Director. He directed the VES Sports Camp for ten summers. so many students remember that Max had much to teach them both in the classroom and on the athletic fields. He was a mentor, role model and friend to his colleagues and students.
Max’s passion for Roman culture and his love of the Latin language influenced him to study in Rome one summer and to lead groups of students and adults to Italy ten times. For many years he served the Classical Association of Virginia as treasure. He was also a member of the Mediterranean Society and the American Classical League.
In recognition of Max’s achievements at VES, he was awarded several distinguished tributes including the prestigious Bradford B. Sauer Family Award, The Paul Fulton Master Teacher Award and a White House Presidential Scholars Award for his success in influencing young scholars. A generous monetary gift to the School on his honor enabled the renovation of the baseball field, and at his retirement in 2002 a special “Max Meador Day” was held when the baseball field was named “Meador Park at Langhorne Field.” He was also awarded an honorary diploma from VES. After retiring Max became the Class Notes Editor of the VES alumni magazine, THE OLD 160.
In his continuation of serving children and youth, he became active in the Kiwanis Club of Lynchburg where he served on the Board of Directors and was President for one year.
An avid sports enthusiast, especially baseball, and a lifelong Boston Red Sox fan, he enjoyed the monthly meetings of the Lynchburg Sports Club. For a time he was a member of the Board of Directors.
In 1959, shortly after their marriage, Max and Jackie joined Peakland United Methodist Church where he remained a loyal member. The two of them were Youth Counselors for a while, and he was Sunday School Superintendent for several years. More recently he enjoyed being on the committees for the Food Pantry and Backpacks for Kids.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, December 29th from 5p.m to 7 p.m. at Tharp Funeral Home. A memorial service will be held at Peakland United Methodist Church on Wednesday, December 30th at 2p.m. A reception in the Chamberlain Fellowship Hall will follow.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you consider donations to Peakland United Methodist Church Foundation for the Future Fund, Virginia Episcopal School, Westminster Canterbury Employee Scholarship Fund, or another charity of your choice.
