Becki Lawman died at her home on the morning of February 7, 2019, just five days from her 86th birthday. She was born in Richmond, Virginia, on February 13, 1933, to the late Nannie Blair Hodges Groome and Walter Winfree Groome. In addition to her parents, Becki was preceded in death by her husband of 61 years, Dayton Woodruff Lawman.
A woman of many interests and accomplishments, Becki was in the forefront when the Commonwealth of Virginia required registration of dental hygienists; she became the thirteenth person to hold that distinction. Over the course of her career of 50 years, she achieved certification from five state boards and worked as a hygienist in Missouri, Texas, and Virginia. She also gave of her time to help others and served for many years as a volunteer at the Central Virginia Free Clinic.
Along with her career, Becki was a devoted mother; she is survived by her children, Catherine Knight and husband Larry, Lynchburg, VA; Dayton (Woody) Lawman, Jr. and wife Melanee, Midlothian, VA; Mary Lynn Bowling and husband, Randy, Chesapeake, VA; and Susan (Suzie) Speeney and husband, Robert, Dublin, Ohio. Becki delighted in reporting the latest happenings of her one great grandchild, Bentley Bolinger and eight grandchildren: Sarah Bolinger and husband, Brandon; Meg Lawman and fiancé, Tommy Norcio; Melinda Bowden and husband, Tom; Morgan Lawman, Reed Bowling; Caroline Bowling, Anna Speeney; and Elizabeth Speeney. She is also survived by one sister, Bettie Ann Williams, of Richmond, VA, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Never one to be inactive, Becki spent her leisure time in a variety of activities—tennis, golf, duplicate bridge, knitting, and reading. With each endeavor she amassed many friends, all of whom will sorely miss her and will lovingly recall the fun times had on the trips to Hilton Head, the discussion of the latest book read, or the three no-trump barely made.
A celebration of Becki’s life will be conducted at Quaker Memorial Presbyterian Church, Lynchburg, VA on Monday February 11th at 1:00 PM. Family and friends will be received concluding the service. In lieu of flowers, kindly donate to the American Cancer Society.
