Rev. Daniel Feryance, 96, died September 27, 2015, in Hardy, Virginia. He was born July 18, 1919, on the family farm in Pershing Township, Taylor County, Wis., to the late John and Susan (Bieleny) Feryance, immigrants from Slovakia. He spent a year (1936-1937) in the Civilian Conservation Corps at Camp Clam Lake planting trees. In May 1944, he received a degree in Biblical Studies from Northwestern Bible College in Minneapolis. He obtained his private pilot’s license in 1945. He married the late Ida Sochor on June 22, 1946. He was ordained a Baptist minister in Oshkosh, Wis., August 13, 1946.
Dan was a life-long missionary with Baptist Mid-Missions. He served in Slovakia (1946-1949), until expelled by the then-communist regime, and in France (1949-1986), where he established a thriving church in the Paris area. After retiring to Moneta in 1986, he did many short-term missionary assignments in France and Slovakia, making his last mission’s trip in June 2005 at age 85.
He received the William C. Haas Lifetime Achievement Award for his pioneer missionary work (2013). He was a member of Colonial Baptist Church in Blue Ridge, and Franklin Heights Baptist Church in Rocky Mount.
Dan had a passion for the local church and loved being a pastor. His faith in his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ was his strength. He loved meeting people, and had memorized scripture in three languages. He enjoyed travelling, and liked to play the guitar, harmonica and to hum hymns. He was very friendly, always cheerful and was the eternal optimist.
He was preceded in death by his parents, siblings, and wife of almost 65 years. He is survived by his children, Daryl and Rebecca; his grandchildren, David, Daniel and Laura; and his great-granddaughter, Elizabeth.
The funeral service and celebration of Rev. Feryance’s life will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, October 2, 2015, at Franklin Heights Baptist Church with Rev. Mark Griffith, Rev. Stan Parris, and Rev. John Dooley officiating. Private family interment will follow in Franklin Memorial Park in Rocky Mount, Va.
