Reverend Patrick James Simon, 80, of Lynchburg, died Saturday, March 18, 2017.

Born on April 17, 1936 in Columbus, Ohio, he was the son of the late Bernard R. Simon and the late Annamae McDonald Simon.

Reverend Simon grew up in the Catholic Church and later served as a Methodist Pastor for the United Methodist Church. He received his Doctorate of Ministry from Liberty Baptist Theological Seminary and became a Methodist Minister in 1994. His last church for which he was the pastor was Shiloh United Methodist Church in Forest, Va. He retired in the early 2000s after leading several to the Lord and always presenting the gospel.

He loved to ice skate as a teenager and played football in high school. He was also a DJ in the 60s and 70s.

He served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War as well as on the U.S.S. Franklin D. Roosevelt Aircraft Carrier (CVA-42).

He is survived by his sister, Sally Ohler; his nieces, Kelly Tankersley, Brenda Lybrand, and Eileen Carpenter; his nephew, Wayne Paul Ohler; and nine grandnieces and grandnephews and their families.

Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife Ruby “Grace” S.R. Simon.

A celebration of Reverend Simon’s life will be held on Tuesday, March 28, 2017 at 11 a.m. at Tharp Funeral Home, Lynchburg followed by a graveside service with military honors at Culpeper National Cemetery at 2:30 p.m.
