Richard Callan Young

Richard Callan Young, 76, passed away peacefully on June 6, 2012, at the Centra Hospice House, where he had been lovingly and attentively cared for  since November 2011.  Richard was preceded in death by his devoted wife, Dorothy, just 9 months earlier.

Richard and Dorothy had moved here from St. Cloud, Florida  where they had met and married just 7 years earlier.  It was felt that being around family was in both their interests after Richards Alzheimer's diagnosis in 2008.

Richard was gifted with a brilliant mechanical mind and the ability to repair or build almost anything.  He loved sharing his abilities with those in need and was often referred to as "Mr. Fix It".  He also had a passion for singing and was involved in many church quartets and the choir while living in Florida.

Richard is survived by his children- Richard E. Young of Virginia Beach, and his daughter, Brenda Young of Pearisburg; his step daughter, Kim Payne of Lynchburg; his 5 grandchildren, Sam and Nicholas Young, Ivy Young, John Ferguson and Joseph Sandvig. In addition Richard is survived by his two devoted sisters, Carol Coons (husband Bill)  and Donna Torpey (husband Bill), all of Rochester, NY, who provided a constant long distant vigil over his care and showed love and concern as only family can do.

The family would like to extend  its heartfelt appreciation to the special caregivers who made it possible to keep Richard home for several weeks after Dorothy's death. Pat Futty, Nancy Hunt and Sherry Younce went above and beyond to show compassion and genuinely care for Richard in the most difficult of times.

Finally, there are just not words to adequately convey the deep gratitude and thankfulness the family feels towards the Centra Hospice Staff. Richards final months, weeks and days were truly life changing for him due to the care and concern he was shown, as well as the many prayers offered on his behalf.  A special thank you to Jane, his hospice nurse who shared those final minutes with Richard.

A service of remembrance will be held at 11 am on Wednesday at Heritage Baptist Church, in the chapel, with Pastor Jerry Kroll leading. Interment will be in Fort Hill Memorial Park. A time of fellowship will follow in the youth dining area. All are invited.

In lieu of flowers the family asks that you kindly consider donating to Centra Hospice.
