Richard “Rick” Frederick Coffee, age 74, of Lynchburg, passed away on May 13, 2025. He was born on March 6th, 1951, a son of the late Shirley Coffee and Lois Turner Coffee. Rick was a beloved father, grandfather, brother, and friend to many, and he leaves behind a legacy of style, warmth, and enduring connections that transformed countless lives in the community he so deeply loved.
For over five decades, Rick dedicated himself to helping others look and feel their best as a respected clothier in the Lynchburg community. In 1986, he founded R. Coffee Ltd., which grew to become not just a men's clothing store but a pillar of the community. Through his business, Rick touched the lives of thousands of customers, providing them with personalized service and sartorial guidance that went beyond simply selling clothes.
Rick is survived by his three sons: Bryce and spouse Pierce, John and spouse Lindsay, and Chuck and spouse Alicia. He was a proud grandfather to seven beloved grandchildren who brought immense joy to his life—and who will fondly remember the epic Nerf battles they shared with him at the store, a place that, for them, was part playground, part clubhouse, and all heart. He is also survived by his brother, Johnny Coffee, and family, in addition to his business partner and dear friend, James Bower, Jr.
Born and raised in Lynchburg, Virginia, Rick remained devoted to his hometown throughout his life. When not at his store, he could often be found on the golf course or enthusiastically cheering for the UVA football and basketball teams. He was also an avid Yankees baseball fan, rarely missing a game. Rick's passion for beauty extended to his garden, where he spent many peaceful hours nurturing his plants with the same care and attention he gave to everything in his life.
Those who knew Rick will fondly remember his gift for friendly banter, his impeccable taste, and his genuine interest in everyone he met. His store wasn't just a place of business—it was a gathering place where relationships were built and community bonds strengthened.
