Richard Culbertson

September 6, 1932 — June 28, 2014

Richard Culbertson, 81, of Lynchburg, died Saturday, June 28, 2014.  He was the husband of Mary Margaret Nelson.

 

Born September 6, 1932 in Topeka, Kansas, he was the son of the late Dan Culbertson and Zeda Mae Mason Culbertson.  He was brought up in Topeka, Kansas and Brookfield, Illinois.  After graduation from Riverside-Brookfield High School in 1951, he attended Kansas State University.  He was SPC.II in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, and was a photographer, stationed in Kaiserslautern, Germany. After his discharge he married Mary Nelson on June 1, 1957, and then graduated from the University of Illinois with a B.F.A. in Industrial Design.  He was one of five in the nation who received the American Society of Industrial Design Student Award in 1960.

 

Richard was employed by General Electric and Ericsson as Manager of Industrial Design until his retirement in April of 1997.  He was a Life Member of the University of Illinois Alumni Association.  Richard was a member of Peakland United Methodist Church.

 

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his son; David John Culbertson and his wife, Marlene Dzurec Culbertson; granddaughter, Halle Elizabeth Culbertson; two brothers, John Mason Culbertson and Robert James Culbertson along with several nieces and nephews.

 

A memorial service will be held in Peakland United Methodist Church Tuesday, July 8, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.
