Richard “Dick” Dean Schneider, 90, of Lynchburg, VA passed away at home on November 10, 2018. Dick faced death as he lived his life: with grace, fortitude and kindness. During his last weeks, he never once complained, routinely exhibited humble gratitude, and often entertained his family, friends and residential staff with continued good humor and witticisms.
Richard was born on January 29, 1928 in Des Moines, Iowa to Donald and Lillian (Anderson) Schneider. He graduated high school from East High, Des Moines, IA (’46), where he played football, basketball and tennis. He joined the army immediately thereafter, serving from 1946-1948, attaining a rank of Tech. 4th Grade. With the assistance of the GI Bill and hard work, Dick put himself through college, graduating with a degree in General Engineering in ’51 from Iowa State University, where he also played state championship level tennis. He additionally enjoyed bowling, golf, skiing and fishing; in his later years he enjoyed milder pursuits such as crossword puzzles, Sudoku, jigsaw puzzles, Bridge, and card games with his family. To the end, he loved WWII history, coffee and brownies, and disliked onions and corruption.
After college, Dick worked at the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission in Ames, Iowa where he met the love of his life, Donna Joan (Ford) Schneider of Coon Rapids, Iowa. They were happily married for nearly 61 years (m. 12-15-1957). Soon after their wedding, Dick and Donna moved to Boston for Dick to earn his MBA from Harvard Graduate School of Business (’58).
Dick worked for several companies in his lifetime, including start-ups in Minnesota: Superior Separator Co., Flo-Tronics, Inc., and ENRG International. In 1973, he moved his family from Minnesota to Redding Ridge, Conn., to work for Stauffer Chemical Company in Westport, Conn. In 1981, he was promoted to Managing Director of Stauffer Australia, and moved the family to Sydney, Australia for six years. There he oversaw the operations of the company’s entire Pacific Division, which he often said was the highlight of his career. When he retired in 1986, he went on to help a few other start-up businesses before retiring “for good” in 2014. Dick and Donna moved to Glen Ellyn, Illinois in 1994, where Dick did the accounting for his daughter Susan’s medical practice.
Throughout his life, Dick had a deep faith in Jesus and served God and his church family by teaching Sunday School classes and Bible studies for teens, adults, and young married couples, and by serving on elder boards. Dick tried his best to model Christlike behavior to his family, friends and business associates. Dick firmly believed that one’s faith should not “be abandoned at the door” of the business office; he was accountable to God to live a life of integrity and honesty in every arena, and to let his Christian beliefs of “loving God and loving others” inform his daily business behavior and decisions. He was a firm supporter of ministry and missionaries, including his son Terry’s family for 22 years in Austria, and his daughter Karen’s family for 8 years in Israel.
Richard is preceded in death by his parents, Donald and Lillian Schneider, and his brother, Dr. Kenneth Schneider. Despite all his business successes, Dick would be the first to tell you that his greatest accomplishment was his family, to whom he was devoted. He is survived by all of them: his beloved wife Donna, his son Terry and wife Donna Jeanne (Miller) Schneider of Lynchburg, VA, and their seven children: Joseph (Katie), Samuel (Jessica), Michael (Bethany), Timothy (Miranda), Jessica, John, and Julia; his daughter Karen (Schneider) Seevers and husband Boyd Seevers, PhD. of Spring Lake Park, MN, and their four children: Joshua, Rachel (Will) Ricci, Yoni (Emily), and Becca; his daughter Kathryn “Kathy” Schneider of Minnesota; and his daughter Dr. Susan (Schneider) Rocco and husband Dr. Carmen Rocco of Chicago, IL, and their three children: Christopher Schneider, Olivia Rocco, and Eliese Rocco, along with 12 great-grandchildren. Dick was immensely proud of his “Clan of Forty-one.” He is survived also by three nephews, Richard “Rick” Schneider of Portland, OR, Dr. John Schneider of Indianapolis, IN, and Joe Schneider of Cobb, CA.
A memorial service for Mr. Schneider will be held on Saturday, December 1, 2018 at Tharp Funeral Home, 220 Breezewood Drive, Lynchburg, VA 24501. There will be a visitation with family at 2:00 p.m., the memorial service with military honors following at 3:00 p.m., and light refreshments and fellowship afterward. Interment service of cremains will likely take place in the Midwest in 2019.
If desired, memorial gifts may be given in lieu of flowers to MedSend, an organization that financially frees up newly graduated medical doctors to go serve in the poorest parts of the world by paying off their school loans if they work in the field for several years.
