Richard Edward Giovanelli, 69, of Amherst passed away on Friday, January 26, 2024, after struggling with cancer for the past year.
Richard was a police officer with the City of Lynchburg for almost 15 years. He then worked in the transportation industry until retiring three years ago. He was born in Brooklyn, NY and then moved to Wading River, NY when he 13.
Richard was a voracious reader. He enjoyed books on history, politics, and native American culture. He also possessed an eclectic taste in music-one day classical, the next day it might be Willie Nelson. But most of all, he loved his family and his best four legged buddy Gizmo.
Richard is survived by his wife of 34 years, Pam, and his son, William; sister, Gerri and husband, Pete, of DeLand, FL, his brother Steven, wife, Joanna, and their children Nick and Victoria of Astoria, NY; his brother James and his son Robert, of New Hyde Park and son Alex and wife Kat of Fort Drum, NY; cousins Maureen Bianco and husband Nick of West Babylon, NY and Carol Johnson Manchester, NH and by his sister-in-law, Linda, of Chestertown, NY.
Richard was preceded in death by his parents, Edward and Catherine Giovanelli, infant brother, Martin and a cousin, Robert McDermott.
Richard is now at his grandfather's cabin in Wading River. The stories he told about summers spent there and when he lived there, it was a happy time for him.
Per his wishes, no funeral services are planned.
Tharp Funeral Home & Crematory, Lynchburg, is assisting the family.
