Richard Michael Bunn

June 12, 1942 — July 26, 2022

Richard Michael Bunn, beloved husband, father and grandfather, departed this earthly life and went to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, on Tuesday, July 26, 2022 after a valiant battle with cancer.

Richard was born on June 12, 1942 in Albany, New York to Michael Laverne and Ivy (Webber) Bunn. He attended Christian Brothers Academy where he played football as a running back. He enlisted in the Navy in 1959, and served 21 years. He met his wife Barbara Moses in 1970 while stationed in Watertown, New York. They were married on March 27, 1970.

While in the Navy, he was stationed in the Antarctic as part of Operation Deep Freeze 1961-63; NATO command headquarters in Naples, Italy 1963-65; Danang, Vietnam 1967-69; USS Robert H. McCard DD822 1976-1980; and other stateside duty stations. He retired from the Navy in 1981. He then pursued an Associates Degree in Computer Programming from National Business College in Lynchburg, Virginia. He joined the Old Time Gospel Hour and then Liberty University working in their computer departments until 1998. His final place of work was as a security officer at The Summit on Enterprise Drive in Lynchburg until his retirement in 2007.

He was predeceased by his parents Michael and Ivy Bunn, and his two sisters June Bowser and Joan Vogel.

He is survived by his wife Barbara; daughters Sarah (Jonathan) Cantor, Eve (Tony) Shrader, Joanna (Clif) Costello-Cocke, and Abigail Costello; his son Michael Bunn; eleven grandchildren: Anna (Cameron) Myers, Isaac Cantor, Naomi (Gaven) Gorney, Phoebe and Mary Cantor, Narelli Pierre, Giovanni and Olivia Cunningham, Jadon and Caleb Cocke, and new grandbaby Seth Shrader; one great grandchild Ruth Myers. In addition, he is survived by his niece Mary Vogel; nephews Wayne Seabridge, Michael Seabridge, Mark (Sue) Vogel, Donnie Vogel, and Luke Vogel, as well as great nieces and nephews.

His wife and children want to thank all of the wonderful, caring staff at Alan B. Pearson Cancer Center. Their thoughtful and professional care of Richard was a blessing. They also want to thank Centra Hospice for their compassionate care.

Calling hours will be held on Sunday, July 31, 2022 from 4-6 pm at Tharp Funeral Home on Breezewood Drive in Lynchburg. The Funeral Service with Military Honors will be held at 11:00 am on Monday, August 1, 2022 at Tharp Funeral Home. A graveside service will follow at Virginia Memorial Park, 11490 Forest Road, Forest, Virginia. Flowers may be sent to Tharp Funeral Home, 220 Breezewood Drive Lynchburg, VA 24502.
