Richard Oglesby Hawkins, Sr. (Papa Rick), 92, left this world Saturday, February 26, 2011 to go to his Heavenly home. Born July 20, 1918 in Wingina, Virginia, he was the son of the late Grace Taylor Hawkins and William Holcomb Hawkins. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Naomi N. Hawkins, and his second wife, Lillie T. Hawkins. He was also preceded in death by his brothers, Sam Hawkins, Edward Hawkins and Holcomb Hawkins and his sister, Sally Wilkes.
He is survived by his son, Richard O. Hawkins, Jr. and wife, Dell of Danville; his sister, Grace Taylor of Roanoke; two step daughters, Sylvia C. Glass and husband, Hylton of Goode and Barbara C. Osborne and husband Preston of Rustburg; his grandchildren, Leslie Phillips and her husband, Kevin, Laura Hawkins, Hunter Hawkins and his wife, Kathleen, Bradley Hawkins, Hallie Hawkins, Sherry Guynn and her husband Dwayne, Cynthia McGill and her husband, Kurt, Wendy Storey and her husband, Eric, Angela Rodriguez and her husband, Raul, Christopher Glass and his wife, LeAnn, Kimberly McGuire and her husband, Brian, Anita Mitchell and her husband, Jack, and Audrey Gallahan; 22 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren.
He was a member of North Bedford Baptist Church. Prior to his retirement, he was a dairy farmer in Bedford County.
A funeral service will be conducted at 2:00 pm on Tuesday, March 1, 2011, in the chapel at Tharp Funeral Home, Lynchburg, with the Rev. Charles Stinson, Rev. Charles Wickham and Pastor Chad Brady officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service and other times at the home of Barbara Osborne, Rustburg.
