Richard Russell Stecker, 77, of Amherst, Va., passed away peacefully in his home surrounded by family on Friday, February 17, 2017. He was the husband of Roseann Orbanus Stecker for sixty years.
Born Thursday, June 15, 1939 in Mantua, N.J., Richard was a son of the late Robert Stecker and the late Rose Swanson Stecker.
In addition to his parents, Richard was preceded in death by his sister Rosemarie Hoffman; sister, Louise Young; brother, Kenneth Stecher, and grandson, Philip Stecker.
In addition to his wife, Richard is survived by his six children, Terry Castagna and husband, Robert, of Berlin, N.J.; Renea Stecker of Hammoton, N.J.; Kim Stecker of Amherst, Va.; Richard J. Stecker and wife, Thelma, of Amherst, Va.; Rebecka Lee and husband, Brennan, of Madison Heights, Va.; and Russell Stecker and wife, Carrie, of Amherst, Va.; nineteen grandchildren, fourteen great-grandchildren, and many loving nieces and nephews.
Richard loved his family and his farm. He enjoyed watching the cows in the field and the birds from his front porch. His favorite past time was cat-fishing with family.
The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Wednesday, February 22, 2017 at Tharp Funeral Home. A celebration of Richard’s life will be conducted immediately after with Rev. Dr. Michael Fitzgerald officiating. Interment will follow in Jonesboro Cemetery. A reception will follow at Clifford Baptist Church.
