Richard Schlegel Royer

Richard Schlegel Royer, 75, of Lynchburg, died Saturday, September 24, 2011 surrounded by his family.  He was the devoted husband of Carole M. Royer with whom he celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in February.  

Dick was born September 16, 1936 in Lancaster County, PA, the son of the late Dr. Harry Keller Royer and Norine Schlegel Royer.  Dick was a graduate of EC Glass High School \"™55 and Gettysburg College \"™59 where he was a member of Phi Delta Theta Fraternity. He was a lifetime member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church where he served in many capacities, among these were church council and choir member. He sang with the Jefferson Choral Society and was an avid outdoorsman who loved to hike, hunt and garden. He was a Master Gardner and was a founder of Habitat for Humanity, served as President of Meals on Wheels and was a board member of the Lynchburg Symphony Orchestra. One of Dick\"™s favorite activities, which gave him much pleasure during the Christmas Season, was portraying Santa to hundreds of Lynchburg youth. In his retirement, he and his wife of 50 years traveled extensively. 

He is survived by his wife, Carole, and their three sons and daughter and their spouses: Bruce and Heather, David and Anne, Stephen and Blake, and Susan and Randy  Schlabach.  Dick is also survived by his ten grandchildren, Corey Beasley, Ashlin, Alexandra, Hannah, Tate, Keller, Austin, Clayton, Sarah, and Billy Royer, his mother-in-law, Christine Meckling, his brother-in-law, Barry Kain and his wife Vonnie, four nephews and two nieces, John Kain and his wife and Kerry, Mark and Dirk Kain, and Jim Humrichouse and his wife Nina, and Kim and Jennifer Humrichouse. 

In addition to his parents, Dick was predeceased by his sister, Nancy Royer Kain, his father-in-law, George Meckling, his brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Pete and Joyce Humrichouse.

A Celebration of Dick\"™s Life will be held at 11 AM on Friday, September 30, 2011, at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church with Pastor Dennis Roberts officiating.  The family will receive friends at Holy Trinity the evening prior, Thursday, September 29, 2011 from 6 to 8 PM.
