Richard Stuart Mears

Richard Stuart Mears, 67 of Lynchburg, died on Wednesday, August 22, 2012, at Virginia Baptist Hospital after a long and courageous battle with cancer.

 Born Tuesday, September 19, 1944 in Fredericksburg, Virginia, he was the son of the late Dorsey Mears and the late Doris Carter Mears. He grew up in Colonial Beach, VA where he has many family and friends.

 He was employed by the City of Lynchburg as a surveyor for 21 years and retired in 1999. He was then employed by RST Marketing for 15 years and a member of Heritage Baptist Church. Richard loved taking long drives in the country, going to Smith Mountain Lake, movies, football and was a devoted fan to the Pittsburg Steelers. He also had great joy at Colonial Beach, VA as much as he could.

 Surviving is his loving and devoted daughter, Alison Mears Hartless. Cousins Susan Willett, Sandra Mudd, Diane Anderson, Zedda Viets, Yvonne Shelgren, Terri Brauning, Tricia Runyon and Zandra McLendon.

 He was loved by many. A special thank you to Leoamia Leo Banks for not only being a great friend, but for providing home health care, to Mike Pulliam, Lewis Thomas, and Ellen Coleman for providing so much support when he needed it during the end of his journey, and to all of his "family" at RST Marketing as they brought him such great joy on a daily basis. Also thank you to the doctors and nurses at the Pearson Cancer Center, Lynchburg General, and Virginia Baptist for being so compassionate, supportive and accomodating throughout his battle.

The family will receive friends from 4:00pm to 6:00pm. on Saturday August 25, 2012 at Tharp Funeral Home Lynchburg . A funeral service will be held 2:00pm Sunday, August 26, 2012 at Heritage Baptist Church with the Reverend Dr. Gerald Kroll officiating. Interment will follow at Virginia Memorial Park.
