Richey Lee Scott, 89, of Lynchburg, Virginia passed away on October 22, 2024. He was the husband of Iva Worsham Scott.
Born June 20, 1935, in Davenport, Iowa, he was the son of the late Harold Scott and Margaret Lynn Scott. He graduated from Iowa State University in 1957 with a degree in physics. After honorably serving in the U.S. Army, he worked as an engineer until he retired from Framatome in Lynchburg.
Rich was a member of Heritage United Methodist Church. An accomplished sculptor, four pieces of his sculpture are located in the sculpture garden at Heritage United Methodist Church.
At the former Covenant Presbyterian Church in Lynchburg, he created a four-foot-high clay relief sculpture depicting all nations. Rich was commissioned to create a bronze memorial for a WWII soldier, which is currently displayed on Monument Terrace.
In his free time, Rich enjoyed studying astronomy and observing the night skies. He was a member of the Roanoke Valley Astronomical Society.
Rich was a lifelong learner who enjoyed sharing his knowledge with others. He was a teacher of English as a second language in Germany, a mentor of chess students in local schools, and an instructor of sculpture at the Lynchburg Fine Arts Center. He enjoyed teaching his grandchildren about astronomy.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children, Erin Scott (Thressa) and Margo Anderson (Scott); his stepdaughter, Gina Moore (John); eleven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; his brothers, Gary Scott (Diane) and Phillip Scott; and nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m., Saturday, October 26, at Heritage United Methodist Church, with interment to follow at Green Lawn Cemetery in Hurt. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the funeral service.
The family wishes to extend a special thanks to Centra Hospice staff and volunteers.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Heritage United Methodist Church.
