Mr. Robert Burr Flickinger of 1833 Hillsdale Road passed away at Centra Lynchburg General Hospital on Sunday, October 19, 2014.
Mr. Flickinger was born on a farm near Aurora, Iowa on February 15, 1925, the son of the late Raymond Flickinger and Fern Flickinger Griffin Freeman. He attended a rural one-room school house through the 7th grade, graduated from the Independence, IA high school in June of 1942, and attended Iowa State University until he reported to Fort Riley, KS on June 25, 1943 for military service.
Mr. Flickinger is a 29 month veteran of World War II. He participated in the Normandy Invasion, The Liberation of France, and The Battle of the Rhine including the Battle of the Bulge. At the end of the war in Europe, he helped manage displaced persons encamped at Idar-Oberstein, Germany.
He returned to the USA and was sent to San Francisco for deployment to the Pacific Theater. After the atom bomb was dropped on Hiroshima on August 6, 1945, deployment was cancelled and he was discharged three months later.
He is a 1949 engineering graduate of Syracuse University and a 1974 MBA graduate of Lynchburg College.
Mr. Flickinger worked for the Babcock & Wilcox Company for 23 years from 1956 to 1979. He initially performed physics calculations for, and authored with, Wayne Spetz and the late Howard Barringer,
