Robert D. \”Œr. D.\” Withers, Sr.

Robert D. \"R. D.\" Withers, Sr., 90, of Rustburg, departed this life to join his heavenly family on May 15, 2010, at his home.  He fought a long courageous battle with cancer and now he is at peace.  He was the husband of the late Marie Campbell Withers.

Born in Campbell County on August 12, 1919, he was the son of the late Daniel S. Withers and the late Helen Schank Withers.

He served in the U. S. Navy and then became a truck driver for many years.  Even after retirement he continued to drive, delivering furniture and flowers.  He loved horses and spent many hours when his children were young teaching them to ride and compete in horse shows.  He also participated in shows in the western and working pleasure categories.

R. D. was a charter member of both the Rustburg Volunteer Fire Department and the Rustburg Ruritan Club and was a lifelong member of Rustburg United Methodist Church.

He is survived by his son, Robert D. \"Danny\" Withers, Jr. and his wife, Pat; his daughters, Jean Brunlinger and her husband, Ray and Anita Hite and her husband, Ronnie; his grandchildren, Dell Withers, Carmen Morse, Candace Donald and her husband, James, Charles Litchford and his wife, Brenda, Lisa Bowe and her husband, Jim, Glenn Litchford and his wife, Kristy, John Litchford and his wife, Julie, Wayne Hite and his wife, Shannon and Cory Hite and his wife, Kristy; twenty great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren and many devoted friends.

In addition to his wife and parents he was predeceased by his sisters, Adele Long, Louise Reed and Mildred Coffey, a grandson, Robert \"Dee\" Withers, III and a great-grandson, Hunter Donald.

The family will receive friends from 7:00 p.m.-8:30 p.m., on Wednesday, May 19, 2010 at Tharp Funeral Home, Lynchburg.  A funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, May 20, 2010 at Tharp Funeral Home with the Rev. Elizabeth Ecklund and the Rev. Samuel Caldwell officiating.  Burial will follow at Fort Hill Memorial Park.  Military honors will be conducted by American Legion Post #16.

The family wishes to thank Gentle Shepherd Hospice and R. D.\"™s many friends for their care, concern and prayers.  In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to a charity of your choice.
