Robert “Dick” Garbee

Robert Percival Garbee Jr., 87, of Rustburg, VA, died Friday, April 19, 2013. He was the husband of Julia C. Garbee, for 69 years.

Born Tuesday, December 29, 1925 in Detroit, MI, Dick was a son of the late Robert Percival Garbee, Sr. and the late Gertrude Barksdale Garbee.

In addition to his wife, Dick is survived by his children: M. Duane \"Pogo\" Garbee, of Smith Mountain Lake, Judith G. \"Cookie\" White and her husband, Gary, of McMurray, PA, and Paul Edward \"Dickie\" Garbee and his wife, Deborah, of Forest; five grandchildren: Robert E. Garbee (Cherie), of Roanoke, VA, Nicholas G. White, of Pittsburgh, PA, Kimberly W. Adkins (Luke), of Mentor, OH, Crystal R. Garbee, of Forest, and Emily K. Garbee, of Forest; three great grandchildren: H. Nichole Garbee, of Roanoke. VA, Jonah R. Garbee, of Roanoke, VA, and Lucy A. Adkins, Mentor, OH.

In addition to his parents, Dick was preceded in death by a son, Robert Stone Garbee and a brother, Lewis Addison Garbee.

Dick helped form and was a charter member of Hyland Heights Baptist Church, sang faithfully in the choir and loved singing in a gospel quartet. He spent many years serving in the office of deacon and was an integral part of the bus ministry. Dick served his country proudly in the US Army during WWII. He began his working career at Strother Drug Company. He then spent 23 years at H K Porter & Company and upon retirement he was a truck collector for Powell Trucking, until he officially retired. Dick was a devoted husband of 69 years, a loving father, and delighted in his grandchildren and great grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m.to 8:30 p.m. on Monday, April 22, 2013 at Tharp Funeral Home, Lynchburg. A celebration of Dick's life will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, April 23, 2013 at Hyland Heights Baptist Church with the Rev. Carl Weiser officiating. Interment will follow in Fort Hill Memorial Park.
