Robert Donald Charlton, 82, of Lynchburg died Monday, May 23, 2011. He was the devoted husband of Jean Hanes Charlton for 55 years.
Robert was born March 1, 1929 in Mannington, WV, a son of the late J. Everett Charlton and Russie Shreve Charlton. He enjoyed a 30-year career in public health, culminating as director of public health in several North Carolina counties. His career exemplified his passion for helping under-privileged people, including the homeless, alcoholics and migrant workers.
Robert also honorably served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict and played varsity basketball for East Carolina University. He received his Master of Science in Public Health from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and remained an avid basketball fan of both universities all his life. His greatest joy, however, came from spending time with his family.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by four sons: Clark Charlton of Lynchburg, VA and his wife Jennifer; Don Charlton of New York City and his wife Janet; Bobby Charlton of Durham, NC and his wife Linda; Russ Charlton of New York City and his wife Julie. He also leaves a sister, Charlotte Bohn, of Baltimore; and seven grandchildren: Kinte, Ben, Patrick, Michael, Lydia, Molly and Ivy.
The family will hold a private memorial service for Robert at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, please consider making memorial donations to Holy Cross Regional Catholic School, 2125 Langhorne Road, Lynchburg, VA 24501.
