Robert Edward Ryan

February 10, 1919 — April 13, 2016

Robert Edward Ryan, beloved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, died on Wednesday, April 13, 2016. He was born in Oil City, Pa., February 10, 1919, son of Edward S. and Anna May Ryan. His brother, William J. Ryan, and sister, Betty Ryan Roddy, preceded him in death.

He graduated from University of Pittsburgh after serving in The South Pacific with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers during WWII. He was married to Marjorie M. Ryan September 20, 1947, and they enjoyed sixty-two wonderful years together, before her death in 2011. He pursued a career as an industrial engineer in the steel industry, until the 1960s. Thereafter, he went on to work in industrial relations and personnel management and came to Lynchburg in 1970 to work for H.K. Porter (Delta Star) as Director of Personnel Management.

In retirement he was a member of the Planning Commission for the City of Lynchburg, serving on the Board of Zoning Appeals. He served many years on the Central Piedmont Private Industry Council, was a counselor with SCORE, and a member of the Board of Directors for the Greater Lynchburg Transit Company.

He will be sorely missed by his only child, Kathleen Clark, her husband Robert; grandchildren: Joseph Clark and his wife, Jessica, Laura Clark Hurdelbrink and her husband, Neil, and Timothy Clark and his wife, Leigh Anne; and seven great-grandchildren, Nathan, Colin, Liam, and Ava Clark, Jaxon and Oliver Hurdelbrink and Lillian Clark.

A Celebration of Life Mass will be held at Holy Cross Catholic Church on Monday, April 18, 2016 at 11:30 a.m. with Rev. Monsignor J. Kenneth Rush, Jr. A private interment will follow for family at Holy Cross Catholic Church Cemetery.

Since he was a cancer survivor, in lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to the American Cancer Society.

Tharp Funeral Home & Crematory, Lynchburg, is assisting the family.
