Robert Elwood Quarles
Robert Elwood Quarles, 92, of Bedford, passed away on Wednesday, January 30, 2013 at the Elks National Home. He was born and raised in the Nicopolis area of Bedford, Co on April 7, 1920 a son of the late Roger W. Quarles and Olla Ellis Quarles. In addition to his parents, Robert was preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Helen Frances Powell Quarles and a sister, Etta Edwards.
Robert served his country in the United States Army Air Force during WWII. He was very proud of his military career and receiving the Purple Heart for his honor and valor. Having served 41 years as a life member of the Elks national home and his local VFW. Robert was a dedicated member and Elder Emeritus of Bedford Christian Church. He loved gardening especially working in his tomatoes. Some even referred to him as the \"Tomato King\". He loved his frequent trips to town and spending time at the local farmers market with his friends. He was a Lithograph Photographer in the art department of Piedmont Label for almost 40 years.
Robert is survived by his loving son, Robert Randal \"Randy\" Quarles and his wife and very special daughter-in-law, Mary Beth of Bedford; also a most loving and cherished grandson, Matthew Quarles also of Bedford; sister-in-law, Alma Fortney; brother-in-law, Edward Powell, In-laws, Tilman and Alice Mahone, also numerous nieces and nephews. Robert had so many special friends and acquaintances through life, and the family would like to thank each and every one of you for what you meant over the years and especially for you kindness in such a difficult time.
Memorial contributions may be made to Bedford Christian Church, 1928 Moneta Road, Bedford, VA 24523. The family would like to also thank the staff and hospice group with the Elks National Home for their love, care and compassion when it was needed most.
A celebration of Robert\"™s life will be conducted at 11:00 am on Saturday, February 2, 2013 at Tharp Funeral Chapel with Pastor Bill Moore and Rev. Jim Compton officiating. The family will receive friends on Friday, February 1, 2013 from 6:00 until 8:00pm at Tharp in Bedford. Arrangements by Tharp Funeral Home & Crematory, Bedford, (540)-586-3443.
