Robert Fredric Eggimann

July 2, 1934 — December 25, 2017

Robert Fredric Eggimann, 83, of Goode, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Christmas morning, at his home. Bob was born July 2, 1934, in Belmar, New Jersey, to Fredric Craig Eggimann and his wife Kathryn (Thompson). He graduated from Manasquan High School, enlisted in the army, and used the G.I. Bill to go to Monmouth Junior College, now Monmouth University, West Long Branch. There he met and then married his wife Carolyn (Alexander), in 1958, during their sophomore year; they were married nearly 57 years when she died in 2014.

After graduating, Bob worked as a civilian at Fort Monmouth, New Jersey. In 1963, he was given an opportunity to leave his wife and small daughter for six months to train as a computer programmer and analyst in Rock Island, Illinois, a career move that luckily put him back at Fort Monmouth for the entire arc of his career. He retired early, and when Carolyn retired from teaching in 1991, they fulfilled their dream of relocating to Goode in Bedford County, where they joined Oakland United Methodist Church.

Bob was a long-time member of the Elks through the Long Branch Lodge in New Jersey; in Virginia he became active as well in Odd Fellows and Ruritans. He enjoyed cooking, and was famous for making delicious chili for church and community suppers. Many people have been gifted with a painting or an ornament from his brush; his skill developed from boyhood but expanded in retirement.

Robert leaves to cherish his memory his only daughter, Lynda Forney, and her husband Jeff; three loving and beloved grandchildren, Alexa, Robert, and Thomas; two dear nieces, Jeanne Dupree and Shari Miller; and many others.

His family wishes to express their heartfelt thanks to Oakwood Manor in Bedford, Centra Hospice of Bedford, the church family of OUMC of Goode, Margaret Templeton and her team of loving home caregivers, and especially to family friend, Mrs. Beverly Wells, for the care and support provided so generously to Bob these past few years.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in Robert Eggimann’s memory may be made to Oakland United Methodist Church, 2465 Goode Station Road, Goode, Virginia 24556; or to Goode Rescue Squad, 9261 Forest Road, Goode, Virginia 24556.

A celebration of Bob’s life will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Friday, December 29, 2017. at Tharp Funeral Chapel in Bedford with the Reverend Kent Wise officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to service, also in the chapel.
