Robert “Monty” G. Montgomery, Jr., 59, of Glen Allen, departed this life peacefully after a long illness on Saturday, June 6, 2015. He is survived by his wife of nearly 25 years, Mary P. Montgomery; his daughters, Mary Alice Montgomery and Megan E. Montgomery of Glen Allen, Va.; his parents, R. Gene Montgomery, Sr. and Alice M. Montgomery of Lynchburg; and his sister, Sue M. Montgomery of Lynchburg.
Monty graduated from Brookville High School in Lynchburg in 1974. His proudest moment was becoming a quarterback for the Brookville Bees and playing with a great team of friends. He continued his education at Ferrum College, where he was also a quarterback and he helped lead his team to the National Championship. After his graduation at Ferrum, he attended the Florida Institute of Technology where he received his degree in underwater technology. Upon graduation, Monty lived in Louisiana and worked as a commercial diver in the Gulf of Mexico for many years. In 1985 he moved to Richmond, Va., where he met his wife Mary and began a long and successful career in the sale of building materials.
Monty loved his home in Glen Allen because he had space to create. He designed and built a beautiful relaxing pond with a trickling waterfall; he hand-laid a large stone patio with walkways; and he also built a beautiful screened porch, complete with a TV so he could watch his beloved Hokies play football if he couldn’t be at Lane Stadium with his family or special football friends, Jeff, Alfred, and Chris, to mention a few.
Monty had many interests including hunting, gardening, cooking, and grilling year-round. He would relax at night watching NCIS or a program about Alaska. He was, above all else, a devoted husband, father, son and brother.
The family would like to thank everyone at Gentiva Hospice and Care Advantage who provided Monty and his family the love, comfort, and tireless attention we needed during this difficult time in our lives.
The family will receive friends at Timberlake United Methodist Church, 21649 Timberlake Road, Lynchburg, VA 24502, on Thursday, June 11, 2015, from 5 until 7 p.m. A Memorial Service will be held on Friday, June 12, 2015, at 11 a.m. at Timberlake United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Lynne Alley-Grant officiating.
There will be a Celebration of Monty’s Life at his home in Glen Allen at a later date.
