Robert Terrell Gordon

Robert Terrell Gordon, 99, of Lynchburg, Virginia, passed away on December 24, 2024. He was the son of the late Alexander Terrell Gordon and Mattie Lee Read Gordon, and the husband of the late Mary Baxter Gordon for 69 years.

Mr. Gordon was born on March 27, 1925, in Madison Heights, Virginia. He graduated from E C Glass High School. He attended Virginia Polytechnic Institute until his education was interrupted by his service in the 84th Infantry Division of the U.S. Army during WWII. He engaged in significant combat experience in Europe, including the Battle of the Bulge. When he returned home, he continued his education, earning a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering. After he graduated in 1949, he had a 35-year career with General Electric.

During his career, he managed the development of the guidance system on the Atlas Missile which included the Mercury Space program. He ended his career as Manager of Advance Development Engineering and Mobile Radio Department.

He enjoyed spending time with his family, playing golf, and many other interests.

Mr. Gordon is survived by his children, Lee Ann Dorsey (David) of Louisville, KY, Baxter Gordon (Jane) of Lynchburg, and Roberta Barnett (Doug) of Columbia, SC ; his grandchildren, Melissa Herre (Adam), Daniel Dorsey (Marianne), Lee Dorsey(Ashley), Will Gordon, Rob Gordon, and Sarah Barnett; his step-grandchildren, John Rose (Jenna), Sam Rose, and Martha Rose; and his great-grandson, Addison Herre. 

In addition to his parents and wife, Mr. Gordon is predeceased by his sisters, Elizabeth Gracey and JoAnn Fowler.

A visitation will be held on Friday, January 10, 2025, at 1 P.M. at Rivermont Evangelical Presbyterian Church, followed by a funeral service at 2 P.M. Interment with military honors will follow at Presbyterian Cemetery.
