Robert Gordon Burnette, Jr.

Robert G. Burnette, Jr. passed away August 27, 2014 at his home after a courageous and long battle with cancer. Born August 1, 1938, son of Robert Gordon and Bessie Overstreet Burnette. He attended Brookhill School and graduated in 1957 from New London Academy. He was employed with C&P Telephone Company, later Verizon, right out of High School. He continued with them until his retirement in 1996 with 39 years of service. Bob married his beloved wife Nancy in 1957. They celebrated their 57th wedding anniversary on August 10th.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by three sons; Robert Scott and wife Linda of Goode, William (Bill) and wife Cheryl of Chester, and MSGT Jeffrey, USAF retired and wife Karen of Goode, five grandsons; Matthew and wife Beth of Goode, Ryan & wife Kelly of Forest, Tyler & Dylan of Chester, and Zachary and one granddaughter, Erin of Goode, and three great grandchildren Noah, Emma, and Savannah.
He was a lifetime member of Oakland United Methodist Church in Goode, where he was a trustee and board member for many years. He was always proud of his sons’ endeavors and was their biggest supporter. He enjoyed fishing, science fiction, nature and his beloved cat, Tigger. The family would like to thank Centra Hospice and Dr. Cecilia MacCallum for the wonderful care provided to Bob and his family.
In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations to Forest Vol. Fire Department, PO Box 140, Forest, VA, 24551 or to Oakland United Methodist Church, 2465 Goode Station Road, Goode, VA 24556.
A celebration of Bob’s life will be conducted at 10 AM, Saturday, August 30, 2014 in the Tharp Funeral Home Chapel, Bedford, with Rev. Dr. H.O. “Tom†Thomas officiating. Burial will follow in Virginia Memorial Park Mausoleum Garden. A reception will be held at Oakland United Methodist Church following the graveside service. The family will receive friends from 6-8 PM, Friday, August 29, 2014 at Tharp Funeral Home, Bedford. Arrangements by Tharp Funeral Home & Crematory, Bedford, 540-586-3443.
